driven by angry farmer

A bailiff sat terrified in his car as a debt-ridden farmer used a digger to lift it off the ground. The confrontation happened as the debt collector visited the dairy farm run by Anthony Halliwell, who took exception to how the man spoke to him. At Carlisle's Rickergate magistrates court today, Halliwell, 51, of Scaleby Hill, Carlisle, admitted criminal damage as well as common assault and obstructing a police officer. Prosecutor John Moran described how the defendant - a man of previous good character - committed the offences on February 15 when bailiff David Steele came into his farmyard. After using his digger to lift Mr Steele's car, Halliwell told him: "Don't come here again." The assault offence was charged on the basis that Mr Steele had feared for his safety when confronted by the defendant.
