Energy companies are letting customers be disconnected by the ‘back door’ leaving tens of thousands of vulnerable households without heating in the coldest months, Labour has claimed. Prepayment customers who cannot afford to top up are effectively ‘self disconnecting’, Caroline Flint said. The shadow energy secretary warned that some energy companies wait up to 90 days before they investigate, leaving households without heating or light for up to three months. She criticised companies for not taking action sooner and warned that thousands of homes could be facing winter months without warmth.
